In 1968, Steve McQueen’s Bullitt hit theaters and changed car culture forever. Its legendary chase scene through the streets of San Francisco, featuring a dark green Mustang fastback, became one of the most iconic moments in automotive cinema. Four decades later, Ford paid tribute to that film legend with the 2008 Ford Mustang Bullitt — a modern reinterpretation that blended retro charm with refined performance.
Built as a special-edition model based on the 2008 Mustang GT, the Bullitt was more than a cosmetic package. Ford's engineers and designers went to great lengths to infuse the car with the spirit of the original 1968 movie machine.
The 2008 Bullitt was not just a tribute — it was a performance-focused machine with distinct improvements over the standard GT.
Under the hood, the Bullitt featured a 4.6-liter SOHC 24-valve V8 engine, tuned to produce 315 horsepower, a modest but noticeable increase over the standard GT’s 300 hp. This boost was achieved through a cold air intake, revised engine calibration, and a performance exhaust system inspired by the Shelby GT.
The intake was a specially designed open-element system modeled after the classic 1968 setup, and the engine calibration sharpened throttle response. Mated to a Tremec 5-speed manual transmission, the Bullitt delivered smooth, precise shifts — enhanced by a solid-feeling, short-throw shifter with a retro cue ball-style knob.
Ford also modified the suspension with stiffer shocks, struts, and springs, along with a revised rear sway bar. These changes lowered the car slightly and improved handling, giving the Bullitt a more planted, confident feel in corners.
Dark Highland Green paint isn’t just a color choice — it’s a statement. Rich, deep, and subtly metallic under sunlight, it was custom-blended specifically to echo the classic '68 fastback's shade. This exclusive hue wasn’t available on any other Mustang model that year, making it a visual hallmark of the Bullitt edition.
One of the most impressive aspects of the 2008 Bullitt is how successfully it captures the essence of the 1968 original without resorting to over-the-top retro gimmicks.
Exterior: No front fog lights. No flashy chrome. Just a clean, purposeful silhouette with a blacked-out grille, Bullitt faux gas cap, and subtle 18-inch Euro-flange wheels. It’s stealthy, stylish, and unmistakably cool.
Interior: Inside, the Bullitt was outfitted with unique aluminum dashboard trim, engine-turned gauge bezels, leather sport seats with special stitching, and Bullitt-branded sill plates. Even the gauge cluster was customized, with a 150-mph speedometer and unique graphics.
Each 2008 Bullitt also came with a serialized dashboard plaque — a small but meaningful touch for collectors.
Behind the wheel, the Bullitt delivered a driving experience that was more refined than the base GT, but still raw enough to feel connected to its muscle car roots. The revised exhaust system provided a deeper, throatier note reminiscent of the 1968 movie car’s soundtrack — aggressive without being obnoxious. Acceleration was brisk, and thanks to the tighter suspension and upgraded brakes, it was a Mustang that could confidently handle both straight-line sprints and canyon curves.
0-60 mph came in the low 5-second range, and the car’s balanced chassis made it one of the most fun-to-drive Mustangs of its era.
The 2008 Ford Mustang Bullitt wasn’t about flash. It was about character, authenticity, and honoring a film that helped cement the Mustang’s place in pop culture. Whether parked under streetlights or carving up back roads, it carried the attitude of Steve McQueen’s 1968 fastback — quiet, fast, and ready to run.
