In the mid-1960s, as the American muscle car era roared into full swing, Chevrolet offered enthusiasts something different — a compact car with a full-sized attitude. The 1966 Chevrolet Chevy II Nova Super Sport wasn’t the biggest or flashiest car in the showroom, but it was one of the most potent. Light, cleanly styled, and available with some serious V8 power under the hood, the ’66 Nova SS proved that you didn’t need a big body to deliver a big thrill.

For 1966, Chevrolet gave the Nova lineup a major facelift. The once-rounded lines were replaced with sharper, more angular contours, giving the car a more aggressive and modern stance. The front end featured a wide, horizontal grille that gave the impression of width and presence, while the subtle character lines down the flanks hinted at performance without shouting. It was a clean, minimalist design that aged remarkably well — a trait that’s helped the Nova SS become a favorite among collectors and hot rodders alike.

What truly set the 1966 Nova apart was the Super Sport model. No longer just an option package, the SS became a standalone model this year, signaling Chevrolet’s intent to give the car a true performance identity. It came with exclusive trim, badging, and visual touches, including bright rocker panel moldings, an aluminum rear deck panel, and a special grille treatment. Inside, the Nova SS featured front bucket seats, a sporty center console when equipped with an automatic or manual transmission, and a unique SS instrument cluster and steering wheel. The overall feel was equal parts muscle car and minimalist — a focused interior that put the driver at the center of the experience.

This particular example captures the essence of what made the Nova SS such a standout. Under the hood sits the legendary 327 cubic-inch V8, a small-block powerhouse known for its high-revving nature, broad torque curve, and bulletproof reliability. The 327 gave this lightweight Nova real muscle car credentials, especially when paired with upgraded internals or performance carburetion. It’s a motor that responds eagerly to throttle input, delivering a punchy, unmistakable V8 rumble through the exhaust that makes every drive feel like a trip back to the golden era of American performance.

Backing that engine is a Turbo 350 3-speed automatic transmission — a popular upgrade from the factory Powerglide. Known for its strength and crisp shifting characteristics, the TH350 brings the Nova into a more modern driving realm, providing better performance, improved acceleration, and more responsive gearing than the original two-speed unit. It’s a perfect match for the 327, offering smooth and dependable operation without compromising the raw, analog feel that defines this car. Driving a ’66 Nova SS today is a raw, analog experience. The sound of the small-block V8 barking through dual exhaust, the feel of the manual gearbox snicking into gear, and the minimalist surroundings of the Black interior all combine to create a visceral connection between car and driver. There's no electronic interference — just you, the road, and the unmistakable rumble of American iron.

Visually, the car is nothing short of striking. Finished in Ermine White, a factory color offered by Chevrolet in the mid-'60s, the paint gives the Nova a clean, timeless appearance that never goes out of style. Against the Nova SS’s squared-off body lines and subtle brightwork, the white paint looks crisp and elegant — the kind of understated finish that lets the car’s stance and proportions do the talking. The Super Sport-specific trim, including the aluminum rear deck panel, rocker moldings, and SS badging, completes the look without going over the top.

Inside, the Black interior creates a strong contrast against the white exterior. Bucket seats, a center console, and a sport steering wheel help define the Super Sport package, giving the interior a cockpit-like feel.

Over the decades, the 1966 Nova SS has become a symbol of an era when performance didn’t require excess. It’s become increasingly rare to find well-preserved or properly restored examples, especially those with original high-output drivetrains and factory trim. Whether restored to factory specs or tastefully modified with modern components, the ’66 Nova SS remains a favorite for collectors who appreciate understated styling paired with raw, uncompromising performance.

In many ways, this car embodies the essence of the muscle car era more than some of its larger, flashier siblings. It’s lean, purposeful, and capable — a car that punches far above its weight class. And for those lucky enough to own or drive one, the 1966 Chevrolet Chevy II Nova Super Sport offers something truly special: the perfect balance of style, speed, and soul.
