How to Prepare Your Corvette for Winter Storage in Ontario

Front side view of 2013 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport

Between the freezing temperatures, constant snowfall, icy roads, and that layer of salt covering roads, driving in the Canadian winter can be a challenge. And as much as we all love our Corvettes, to be honest, they’re not built for this kind of weather. So, what makes an ideal winter vehicle? All-wheel or four-wheel drive, along with a high ground clearance. The Corvette, obviously, has none of those things. That’s why, for most Corvette owners across Ontario, winter most likely means it’s time to put the car away until spring. Here’s another thing: simply parking your Corvette in the garage and tossing a cover over it isn’t enough. If it’s not stored properly, winter can quietly take a toll on your car, such as flat-spotted tires, moisture damage, rust, or not being able to start because of a dead battery. To make sure your Corvette is ready to fire up again in the spring, continue reading with our service team at Munro Motors, as we’ve put together a guide to help you store your Corvette the right way this winter, step by step.

Corvette Winter Storage Checklist

1. Wash Your Corvette First

First things first, give it a proper wash. It might seem unnecessary since it’s not going to be on the road for a while, but trust us, this step matters. A good wash followed by a quality wax or paint sealant will help protect the finish from moisture and oxidation while it’s in storage. Don’t forget the undercarriage if you’ve driven on salted roads, which is totally normal in the Brantford area, to avoid speeding up corrosion. The cabin needs to be taken care of too because a clean space is more likely to discourage pests from trying to make your Corvette their winter home.

2. Check Fluids

If there’s one fluid you don’t want to overlook before winter storage, it’s coolant, also called antifreeze. While your Corvette is sitting untouched for months, temperatures outside can drop well below freezing. If the coolant in your system isn’t properly mixed or is old, it might not prevent the water in the system from freezing. And when coolant freezes, it expands by about 9%, which creates pressure inside the cooling system. Since your Corvette isn’t running, and there’s nowhere for that pressure to escape, it builds up until it cracks the weakest part of the system, such as the radiator, heater core, hoses, and more. It’s just like when you forget you put a bottle of water in the freezer. The next day, the bottle itself is cracked from the inside out.

3. Fill the Gas Tank

Next is to make sure the gas tank is full. The reason behind this is that when a fuel tank is only partially full, moisture from the air can condense on the inside walls of the tank, which can result in water entering your fuel system and eventually damaging the fuel lines or injectors. That is why you need a full tank of gas, as it leaves less room for moisture to build up. Better yet, you can also add a fuel stabilizer after filling up, which helps prevent the gas from going stale during storage. Please note that after adding the stabilizer, let the engine run for a few minutes to circulate it through the system.

4. Protect the Battery

Another important part to look after during winter storage is your Corvette’s battery. When your Corvette sits unused for months, the battery can slowly lose its charge, sometimes even dying completely. To avoid that, the best option is to disconnect the battery. If you find yourself unable to disconnect it, consider using a trickle charger or battery maintainer, which keeps the battery topped up. Additionally, before storing, give the battery terminals a quick clean to remove any corrosion, which often looks like a white or bluish powdery buildup around the battery posts. This helps ensure a strong connection when you hook everything back up in the spring.

5. Adjust Tire Pressure

Besides those components we mentioned above, don’t forget to check or adjust your tire pressure. Tires naturally lose air, especially in colder temperatures, dropping roughly one PSI for every 5 degrees the temperature falls. So even if your tires were fine in the fall, they could be underinflated by the time winter hits. If your Corvette sits for months on underinflated tires, you could end up with flat spots. That’s when one part of the tire stays compressed against the ground for too long, causing wheel deformation. To prevent this, inflate your tires to the recommended pressure, or even a few PSI above, before storage. You can find the proper PSI in your owner’s manual or on the sticker inside the driver’s door. Or, you can use jack stands to take pressure off the tires completely. But for most cases, keeping the tires inflated and rotating them 180 degrees halfway through the winter should be enough to prevent flat spots.

6. Store Your Corvette in a Garage

Now you’re good to go! But whenever possible, store your Corvette in a garage for the winter because it helps protect the car from snow, ice, and road salt in the air, which can slowly cause damage to the paint. What if you don’t have a garage to store your Corvette in for the winter? You still have options. Invest in a high-quality car cover that’s specifically made for outdoor use. Avoid plastic tarps, as they can trap moisture against the paint. A good outdoor cover will help shield your Corvette from the elements while still allowing air to circulate, which reduces the risk of rust.
