Corvette Spring Maintenance Checklist
1. Inspect & Top Up Fluids
After a long winter sitting in the garage, the first thing you’ll want to do is give your Corvette’s fluids a good check. For example, engine oil. Even if you changed it before storage, cold temperatures can cause oil to settle and separate, which leaves less effective lubrication at startup. Check the level with the dipstick, and look for any signs of contamination, like a milky appearance, which could indicate moisture in the system. Taking the time to inspect and top up all your fluids makes sure your Corvette starts the season off in peak condition.
2. Check the Battery
Batteries naturally lose charge, and Ontario winters accelerate that process. If the battery isn’t at full power, you could struggle to start your Corvette, or worse, damage the electrical system by trying repeatedly. Use a multimeter to make sure it reads around 12.6 volts; any lower, and it may need a slow charge with a battery maintainer. As well, inspect the terminals for corrosion, which can look like a white or bluish powder, and clean them if needed. Also, make sure the battery is securely mounted. Once it’s fully charged and clean, your Corvette will fire up smoothly for spring drives.
3. Inspect Tires & Tire Pressure
Besides those components we mentioned above, don’t forget to check or adjust your tire pressure. Check for flat spots, cracks, or dry rot, which can develop if the car sat for months. Next, check the tire pressure. Cold temperatures can lower PSI by about 1 point for every 5 degrees drop, so your tires may be underinflated. Inflate them to the recommended pressure in your owner’s manual or on the driver’s door sticker. If your Corvette sat on jack stands, make sure everything is back in place.
4. Test Brakes
Another important part to look after is your Corvette’s brakes. You can start by visually inspecting the rotors and pads. Surface rust is normal and usually clears after a few stops, but deep rust or uneven wear needs attention. Next, gently test the brakes at low speed in a safe area. Make sure they feel firm, respond smoothly, and don’t make unusual noises when you hit the brake pedal. As well, check for any vibration in the pedal or steering wheel, which could indicate warped rotors. This ensures your Corvette stops safely as you enjoy your first spring drives.
5. Engine & Cabin Air Filter
Now that you’ve checked fluids, battery, tires, and brakes, the engine air filter and cabin air filter deserve an inspection too. A clogged engine air filter can restrict airflow to the intake, which reduces horsepower and fuel efficiency, particularly noticeable in high-performance engines like the Corvette’s V8. Make sure the pleats are free of debris. If it looks dusty, it’s time to replace it. The cabin air filter is equally important. Over winter, it can collect dust, which can affect HVAC airflow and indoor air quality. In some Corvettes, the cabin filter also protects the HVAC system from moisture buildup that can lead to mold. Again, replace it if it looks dirty.
